The Wild Gem began the way most good things do — with questions.

What did people use before modern products existed? And why did we move away from those traditions — for cost, for convenience, for the promise of something better?

And a deep curiosity about what plants already know.

I'm Meghan — a Doctor of Physical Therapy and student of Yoga, based in Edmonds, Washington. My work has always been rooted in one thing: understanding the body honestly. How tissue responds. How muscles and joints function. How the nervous system holds tension and how it releases it. That clinical understanding — combined with a deepening connection to the natural world — is what eventually led me to formulate my own products.

I started with simple balms. Foraging cottonwood buds and learning how oils carry botanical compounds. Exploring how beeswax structures and stabilizes. Seeing how much a well-chosen ingredient can do when it isn't competing with twenty others for attention.

The more I learned, the more the answers surprised me. Calendula — used for wound healing for centuries — contains faradiol esters that modern science has since standardized and confirmed as genuinely anti-inflammatory. Rosehip — pressed by traditional healers long before vitamin C had a name — is now standardized for its active fractions to ensure consistent potency.

The ancients weren't guessing. They were observing.

Ancient botanical traditions already solved most of the problems we're still trying to solve — thousands of years before clinical science gave them names. Ayurvedic practitioners knew bhringraj stimulated hair follicles centuries before we understood ecliptine. Amazonian communities knew sacha inchi healed skin long before we mapped omega-3 pathways. Mediterranean healers used mastic resin for antimicrobial wound care before Staphylococcus had a Latin name.

Modern science didn't replace that wisdom. It confirmed it.

At The Wild Gem we bring both together — because those ancient traditions deserve a closer look, not a replacement. Ancient botanical intelligence and current formulation science — in minimal, purposeful formulas that honor where the knowledge comes from. Several of our formulas draw exclusively from a single regional tradition — Amazonian, Ayurvedic, Mediterranean, or Pan-Asian — ingredients native to one region, with generations of knowledge about how they work together in the body. Every ingredient is chosen because it does something nothing else in the formula does. Every formula is tested empirically — not just theoretically — before it becomes a product.

There is something else in all of this too — something more personal.

I was tired. Tired of so many bottles. Tired of plastic that gets labeled recyclable but rarely actually is. Tired of feeling disconnected from the Earth in the ordinary moments of a modern day — and wondering how to bring that connection back.

The way things used to be done — a balm made from local plants, a brush cut from natural fiber, a soap that left nothing behind — was not just effective. It was honest.

It assumed a relationship with the earth rather than a transaction with it.

At The Wild Gem we try to recover some of that. Not out of nostalgia — but because stewardship makes sense. Even our decision to use powdered surfactants rather than liquid formulas is rooted in this — less water in the formula means less packaging, less preservatives, less weight, less waste in shipping. Modern technology in service of an older idea. Minimal waste. Thoughtful choices. A little more integrity in the everyday.
